No time-based vignette here — Croatia charges its motorways by the kilometre. Here's how the tolls work, why the Pelješac Bridge changed the drive to Dubrovnik, and what to budget for a coastal road trip.
Croatia charges by distance, not a vignette
This trips up a lot of first-timers: unlike neighbouring Slovenia or Austria, which sell a time-based vignette sticker, Croatia tolls its motorways by distance. You collect a ticket as you enter and pay on exit, at roughly €0.06–0.08 per kilometre for a car.
In practice that means a drive like Zagreb to Split — about 380 km down the A1 — runs on the order of €25–30 in tolls. So no, you don't need a vignette for Croatia; you just pay for the distance you actually drive.
The ENC electronic tag
Regular drivers fit an ENC transponder — an electronic tag that debits a prepaid account, opens the barrier automatically and comes with a discount, handy in the summer queues. For a one-off holiday it's usually simpler to just pay by card at the booth, but if you're renting for a couple of weeks it can be worth asking about.
The A1 is the spine of any road trip
The modern A1 motorway is the backbone of a Dalmatian road trip, sweeping from Zagreb past Zadar and Split toward Ploče. It's fast and scenic — but it can clog on peak summer weekends, so time your long legs for early morning.
The Pelješac Bridge changed the drive to Dubrovnik
Until 2022, driving from Split to Dubrovnik meant crossing a short strip of Bosnia & Herzegovina at Neum — a non-EU border with passport checks and summer tailbacks. The new Pelješac Bridge now leaps across the bay and keeps you inside Croatia (and the EU) the whole way, which has made the southern coast far easier to road-trip.
Fuel, speed and the essentials
Croatia joined the euro in 2023, so fuel is priced in euros; the motorway limit is 130 km/h, dipped headlights are required in the winter months, and the twisting coastal roads reward a slow, scenic pace over the fast motorway. Plan the route (and the stops) with our trip planner before you set off.
🧮 What the driving costs
Fuel and tolls for the distance you expect to cover.
An estimate: real tolls depend on the route, and pump prices move every week.
